Practical advice for parents and vaccination for RVS immunization

Dear parents,

You may have heard of RSV. The respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a virus that can causes a bronchiolitis in young children. Young infants are more likely to experience a more serious course of the disease, with respiratory distress and the risk of dehydration leading to a hospitalization. To prevent this, drugs have been developed to protect them. Since this year, the government has decided to reimburse the cost of this medication for children born after 18/02/2025.

What is it?

  • Beyfortus®, nirsevimab
  • These are RS virus-specific antibodies, which remain active in the body during the RSV season (October to March). Immunity does not persist thereafter.
  • It is administered once at the start of the RSV season (October) to children born after 18/02/2025.
  • Children born after 1/10/2025 will be offered the RSV medication at the hospital’s maternity.

How much does it cost?

  • Largely reimbursed: you pay 12 euros, or 8 euros if reimbursed at a higher rate.
  • Please note! the cost is not reimbursed if the mother received an RSV vaccine during pregnancy.
  • Each child can only be vaccinated once during the RSV season (October to March).
  • Children born before 1/10/2025 must be immunized before 31/10/2025, otherwise they will not be reimbursed

How can I protect my child?

The vaccination is not administered by Kind en Gezin.
At AZ Jan Portaels Hospital, we offer the possibility to administer the RSV vaccine. During this consultation, only the vaccine will be given. The administration is carried out by the pediatricians of AZ Jan Portaels, and no prescription is needed.
